Limewire to open a DRM-free digital music store
M&A News
[MarketClusters - 15 Aug 2007]

Limewire is opening a DRM-free digital music store after years of operating as an illegal P2P file-sharing site. The store will initially function as a standalone website, which can also be accessed from the file-sharing software, although there are plans in the future to allow users to browse and purchase music directly from within Limewire's file-sharing application. Music will be compatible with the MP3 format and customers will choose from buying individual songs and albums or subscribing to a monthly plan.

For the launch, Limewire is partnering with indie music distributor, IRIS Distribution and Canadian music label, Nettwerk Productions, which will provide music from their catalogues. There has been no indication that Limewire will partner with Universal and EMI, which are both now selling DRM-free music.

In Mar the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) threatened to sue Limewire over its application, which is apparently installed in 18.3% of desktops worldwide, to stop the application sharing files which breach copyright. Forward to colleagues
